“Hard-working employees are modest. It is your responsibility to be able to see and reward their dedication.”

“Oleg, I worked at a company which laid off some of their best developers. These developers worked very hard to make sure that their computer code never breaks.

So when the management had to make cuts, they picked these developers. They were neither visible nor deemed to be needed by the management. People whose code constantly broke stayed on. What are your thoughts on this matter ?”

I wish I could say this is an exception. If you remember the film Office Space, the guy who did 15 minutes of work every week stayed, and his two colleagues got the ax.

Hard-workers tend to be modest ones. Hard work comes with soft talk.

But, as the Scottish proverb has it – “The empty barrel makes the most noise.”

It takes a savvy manager and a leader to recognize the hard work, and then reward it.

It is actually not that difficult, because hard-work comes in a package with other great qualities:

self-motivation

self-direction

positive attitude

modesty

and of course, results.
